KSK data portal
The Košice region runs a public data portal: investors look up zones, and residents check housing, schools, and transport.
KSK Data Portal: Transforming Regional Data Access
The Košice Self-Governing Region (KSK) Data Portal represents a significant leap forward in making regional data accessible, understandable, and actionable for citizens, investors, and policymakers.
The Challenge
The Košice region had vast amounts of valuable data scattered across different systems and formats. This made it difficult for:
- Investors to identify strategic investment opportunities
- Citizens to find information about housing, education, and transport
- Policymakers to make data-driven decisions about regional development
Our Solution
We developed a comprehensive data portal that consolidates regional information into a single, intuitive platform. The portal features:

Interactive Map Tool (Maptool)
The centerpiece of the portal is an AI-powered interactive map that allows users to:
- Search through multiple datasets simultaneously
- Visualize data geographically
- Filter and combine different data layers
- Export findings for further analysis
Key Features
For Investors:
- Strategic zone identification with infrastructure data
- Investment project tracking
- Funding opportunity discovery
- Regulatory information access
For Citizens:
- Housing market insights
- Education facility locations and ratings
- Public transport accessibility
- Quality of life indicators
For Everyone:
- Real-time regional development updates
- Local event calendar
- Legislative changes tracking
- Comprehensive data visualization tools

Technology Stack
The portal is built using modern web technologies:
- Frontend: React with Next.js and TypeScript for a responsive, fast user experience
- Styling: Tailwind CSS for consistent, modern design
- Backend: Strapi CMS for flexible content management
- Database: PostgreSQL for reliable data storage
- Infrastructure: Docker containers on AWS for scalable deployment
Impact
Since launch, the KSK Data Portal has:
- Increased transparency in regional governance
- Facilitated data-driven decision making
- Improved citizen engagement with regional data
- Attracted new investment through better information access
Lessons Learned
This project taught us valuable lessons about:
- The importance of user-centric design in data visualization
- Balancing technical complexity with user accessibility
- Building scalable systems that can grow with data needs
- The power of AI in making large datasets navigable
The KSK Data Portal demonstrates how thoughtful design and modern technology can transform how people interact with public data, making it more accessible and useful for everyone.
